Eggs and meat from the same poultry: an idea that raises ecological and economic questions
Dual-purpose chickens, used for both meat and eggs, could be a potential solution to avoid the slaughter of male chicks. Nevertheless, it’s a compromise.
Why it matters. 45 million male chicks are killed every year in Germany, while 3 million in Switzerland. The reason: they do not lay eggs and do not plump out because of the separate breeding lines.
