A pathogen is just around the corner

The West Nile virus is known to infect birds, horses and humans. It has already been detected in neighbouring countries. When will it reach Switzerland?

Why it matters. The recent reports might have unsettled many a holidaymaker. In Greece, four people have already died this summer of an infectious disease that many may have never heard of: West Nile fever. In Romania, too, a person has succumbed to the viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes. 46 cases in total have also been reported The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC)in Italy, Cyprus, Hungary and France (as of 8 August).
