With fate of high seas at stake, governments progress toward a treaty

By now it’s no secret that our ocean is under assault from multiple threats. Just this spring a United Nations body (the International Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services IPBES) released a report on the global state of nature, and it paints a bleak picture of habitat degradation and species loss.

  • Industrial fishing fleets are active in more than half of the ocean area, and over one-third of fish stocks are overexploited.
